Tips for travelling to Film Festivals

M&J are in Toronto at the Female Eye Film Festival this week for the closing night screening of our short film, MENTAL. I have been following MENTAL on its festival run with M, for almost two years now and as such, I have gotten pretty used to prepping, packing and settling in at hotels.

Here is my advice on how to prep for / approach this type of travel:

A Work in Progress

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental disorders characterized by significant feelings of anxiety and fear. Anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current ones. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a fast heart rate and shakiness aka how my body feels ‘when I drink too much coffee.'

Back in five

Recently it was suggested to me that I set aside time for micro-breaks throughout the day. Small periods of five minutes to focus on my breath, etc. It was given to me as a tactic to avoid burnout.

I found the suggestion preposterous.

Assembling Your Team

Emotions are contagious.

I have found that when a group of positive, proactive, people are working together toward a common goal, even intense pressure-filled situations can be enjoyable. Those high stakes, high stress, moments occur often in film. I highly suggest taking that into consideration when deciding who to add to key positions while crewing up.

Certain I'm Uncertain

I have always been certain that I want to work in the arts, find romance, live by the water and build a life filled with love, and adventure.  

I have never been certain about having children.
